CONCEPT
Etxegoki is a pioneering supported housing facility designed to promote independent living for people with physical disabilities, located in the Txurdinaga neighbourhood of Bilbao. Developed by the Bizkaia Provincial Council and operated by the disability federation FEKOOR, the project introduced an innovative residential model based on individual apartments combined with personalised support services, enabling residents to live autonomously while receiving assistance when needed.
The complex comprises fully adapted apartments equipped with assistive technologies and domotics designed to facilitate daily activities and maximise personal autonomy. Each dwelling integrates accessible living spaces, adapted bathrooms and kitchens, and technological systems that allow residents to control elements of their home environment independently. Beyond the architectural design, Etxegoki represents a new social care model aimed at overcoming traditional institutional residences. The project promotes community integration, autonomy and personal decision-making, functioning as a reference model for inclusive housing and accessible residential development in Europe.
AWARDS
The building has received significant international recognition.
In 2015, Etxegoki was awarded the International Best Practice Award for its pioneering approach to inclusive housing.
In 2017, it received a further international distinction acknowledging its contribution as a European reference in accessible residential development, reinforcing its status as an innovative model for independent living and inclusive residential architecture.
